Under sunny skies on Saturday, October 27, 2007, former U.S. Senator Slade Gorton and Bill Gates, Sr., were among speakers before a crowd of over 100 people gathered to celebrate a new park at one of the most dramatic views in the Mountains to Sound Greenway. Master of ceremonies Snoqualmie Mayor Matt Larson described the many turns of fortune on the piece of land that almost became an office and warehouse site at the foot of Rattlesnake Mountain. Other speakers included Greenway Founding President Jim Ellis, current President Bill Chapman, Everett White from the US Forest Service, state Representative Fred Jarrett and Ed Conyers and Carrie Sunstrom from the Washington State Department of

Transportation. 

The 8.5-acre Snoqualmie Point Park was protected by the cooperative work of the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust, the Trust for Public Land, the City of Snoqualmie and the USDA Forest Service.  Major donors include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Federal Highways Administration Scenic Byways Program, the 2006 Washington State Legislature and many other generous individuals and organizations.

Public forests surrounding Snoqualmie Point Park, protected as part of the Greenway, provide recreation, sustainable timber harvest, wildlife habitat and clean air and water. These public forests and nearby Rattlesnake Mountain have a central place in the Creation Story of the Snoqualmie Tribe. Members of the Snoqualmie Tribe led a procession to the ribbon cutting with traditional drums and chant.
